How to Extract Text from Screenshots with OCR

What MemoBraid can extract today from files and images — honestly.

Introduction

Screenshots are where modern knowledge hides: error messages, slide bullets, chat excerpts. Turning them into searchable notes is valuable — and it is also where tools often overpromise.

This page describes MemoBraid’s real import behavior so you can plan a workflow that works today.

What you'll learn

  • How Import / Capture handles files in MemoBraid
  • What works for PDF and plain text vs image OCR
  • A reliable workflow when automatic extraction is limited

What MemoBraid can import today

From Capture → Import, Markdown and plain text files import cleanly. PDFs are best-effort text extraction in the browser; if extraction fails, MemoBraid tells you rather than inventing content.

DOCX support is limited (placeholder-level). Image files are not a full dedicated OCR engine in the current product — treat screenshot text as something you may need to paste manually for reliability.

A practical screenshot workflow

When text must be searchable: paste the important lines into a note, keep a short label like “screenshot — billing error,” and optionally store the image elsewhere if you need the pixels.

When a PDF has a text layer, Import may pull enough for search. Skim the resulting note and fix gaps before you rely on it for Ask AI.

Why honesty matters for SEO readers

If you searched for OCR, you deserve a clear answer: MemoBraid helps you capture and search notes locally, with file import helpers, but it is not marketing a cloud OCR API as a core feature. Prefer durable text in the note body.

Import what you can, paste what you must

  1. Open Notes and launch Capture.
  2. Choose Import for `.md` / `.txt`, or PDF when you expect a text layer.
  3. Review the created note for missing passages.
  4. For screenshots, paste critical text into the note body so Home search can find it.
  5. Add a Collection or tags once the text is trustworthy.

Turn research into searchable notes

Start from Capture or New Note — searchable text beats a lonely PNG.

FAQ

Does MemoBraid upload images to an OCR server?

Import runs in your browser. MemoBraid does not provide a MemoBraid-hosted OCR cloud as part of the core app.

Why is my PDF empty after import?

Scanned PDFs without a text layer often cannot yield text in a lightweight browser extractor. Paste key excerpts manually.

Can Ask AI read text still stuck inside an image?

Ask AI and search operate on note text you stored. If the words never entered the note, they cannot be retrieved.
