What Is Local-First Note Taking?
Local-first explained, and how MemoBraid keeps notes on-device.
Introduction
Local-first software treats your device as the primary home of data. The network is optional. For notes, that means you can write, search, and organize without creating an account or trusting a vendor database with your drafts.
What you'll learn
- What local-first means in practice
- How MemoBraid stores notes
- How optional AI fits a local-first product
Local-first in one sentence
Your notes remain usable on your machine even when you are not logged into a MemoBraid cloud — because there is no MemoBraid cloud library in this product.
How MemoBraid implements it
Notes and collections persist in IndexedDB inside your browser profile. Refreshing the page keeps your library. Clearing site data or switching browsers/profiles will not magically carry notes over — export if you need a copy.
Optional AI without surrendering the library
BYOK AI is an on-demand pipe to your provider for organize/ask features. It is not the storage layer. You can ignore AI entirely and still have a full capture/search/collections workflow.
Tradeoffs to accept
You gain privacy and ownership. You take on backup discipline and device-specific storage. That tradeoff is intentional for a personal second brain.
Keep notes under your control
Write locally. Export when you want a portable backup.
FAQ
Is local-first the same as end-to-end encrypted sync?
No. MemoBraid’s MVP focuses on on-device storage and export, not E2E multi-device sync.
Can MemoBraid staff read my notes?
Your note library is not uploaded to MemoBraid servers as part of normal use.
What about analytics?
Marketing pages may include standard site analytics. That is separate from storing your note database.
