How to Export and Back Up Your Notes

Export JSON or Markdown so your library stays portable.

Introduction

Local-first only feels safe when you know how to leave with your data. MemoBraid includes export and import so your second brain is not trapped in a black box.

What you'll learn

  • Where export lives in Settings
  • JSON vs Markdown backups
  • How import/wipe fit disaster recovery

Choose a backup format

JSON is the fuller workspace snapshot for restore into MemoBraid. Markdown is friendlier for reading in other tools or archiving as files.

Pick based on intent: recovery vs portability.

Make backup a habit

Export before browser upgrades, profile cleans, or device changes. Store the file somewhere you control.

Import and wipe

Settings also supports import and a wipe action. Wipe is destructive — use it only when you mean to clear the local library after you have a backup.

Export from Settings

  1. Open `/app/settings` (Settings route; not currently pinned in the slim sidebar).
  2. Choose Export JSON or Export Markdown.
  3. Save the downloaded file to your backup location.
  4. Optionally verify by importing into a fresh profile later.

Own a portable copy

Local-first works best with an export you can hold.

FAQ

Does export include AI keys?

Treat downloads carefully. Prefer not to share backup files; review contents before sending anywhere.

Can I schedule automatic backups?

Not in the current MVP. Manual export is the supported path.

Why is Settings missing from the sidebar?

The settings pages exist; the slim sidebar currently focuses on Home, Notes, and Collections. Open `/app/settings` directly.
